Maine Two Foot Railroads were introduced around 1876 and continued to flourish until World War II. The narrow track width and maneuverability of the trains were especially suitable for the mountainous terrain and were highly beneficial to the companies and passengers traveling to remote locations. The narrow gauge railroad served Maine for over fifty years and continued to operate through the 1940s.
Today, residents and visitors to the Greater Portland can enjoy a one and half mile excursion along the shores of Casco Bay.
